Summer Reading Assignment Grade 8
WELCOME TO GRADE 8!
WELCOME CLASS OF 2017
This year promises to be an exciting year for you.
I look forward to welcoming each of you to Grade 8 in September and working with you to continue to continue some of the traditions that are an integral part of Saint James.
Each of you will assume leadership roles within the school. My expectation is that the younger students will see you as role models and want to emulate your virtues.
Enjoy a restful summer and come to school in September prepared to meet the challenges of 8th grade.
Your first challenge will be Summer Reading. There will be two required readings for all 8th grade students - The Outsiders. This one will be the class read. Everyone is expected to read this one and it will be the topic for discussion in the first weeks of school.
Assignment for required reading:
Select 5 chapters that you read and enjoyed: Create a journal with the following criteria:
Write a summary of the chapter and include an illustration. (7-10) sentences
Include an opinion of the book at the end of the journals. It should be about 5-7 sentences. (Did you like it? Why or why not? Give concrete reasons for your opinion.)
Make a cover for the journal including the title of the book with an illustration.
All work is to be typed. 12 font. Double-spaced.
Choose a book from the following list for your second reading:
Esperanza Rising (Pam Munoz Ryan) Esperanza and her mother are forced to leave their life of wealth and privilege in Mexico to go to work in the labor camps of Southern California, where they must adapt to the harsh circumstances facing Mexican farm workers on the eve of the Great Depression.
Let the Circle Be Unbroken (Mildred Taylor) (Historical Fiction): Four black children growing up in Mississippi during the Depression experience prejudice and hard times, but learn from their parents the pride and self-respect they need to survive.
Soldier's Heart (Gary Paulson) (Historical Fiction): Eager to enlist, fifteen-year-old Charley has a change of heart after experiencing both physical horrors and mental anguish of Civil War combat.
Year Down Yonder (Richard Peck) Mary Alice and Grandma Dowdel return for more astonishing, laugh-out-loud adventures when fifteen-year-old Mary Alice moves in with her spicy grandmother for the year. Her extended visit is filled with moonlit schemes, romances both foiled and founded, and a whole parade of fools made to suffer in unusual and (always hilarious) ways.
Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War II (Joseph Brurchac) (Historical Fiction): After being taught in a boarding school run by whites that Navajo is a useless language, Ned Begay is recruited by the Marines to become a Code Talker, sending urgent messages during World War II in his native tongue.
Do the Math: Secrets, Lies, and Algebra (Wendy Lichtman) Tess has always loved math, and she uses mathematical concepts to help her understand things in her life, so she is dismayed to find out how much math - and life - can change in eighth grade.
Down the Rabbit Hole:An Echo Falls Mystery (Peter Abrahams) Eighth grader Ingrid Levin-Hill idolizes Sherlock Holmes, so it is not surprising when, stumbling across a murder, she opts to keep what she knows a secret and tries to solve the crime herself.
Leap of Faith (Kimberly Brubaker Bradley) Forced to attend a Catholic middle school because of her conduct, Abigail discovers a talent for theater and develops a true religious faith.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (John Boyne) When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move to a new house far, far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do.
Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer (John Grisham) In the small city of Strattenburg, there are many lawyers, and though he's only thirteen years old, Theo Boone thinks he's one of them. Theo knows every judge, policeman, court clerk - a lot about the law. He dreams of being a great trial lawyer and a life in a courtroom.
Assignment #2 Read one book from the list. Create a Movie Poster with a scene from the book. Write a short synopsis of the novel (10-15) sentences. Synopsis should be typed, 12 font, double spaced. Name the leading roles with a famous actor/actress in the movies today. Illustration of a scene from the book should be on a piece of poster board. (22 x 30). Your summary should be attached to the front of the poster. Go to a movie and check out some of the postings for upcoming movies to see what is expected. Your poster should be colorful and exciting.
All work for the two novels is due on Monday, September 12. Happy Reading:))
